Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is used when:

  • A woman has inadequate cervical mucus that is not receptive to her partner's sperm
  • A woman's partner has decreased sperm quality
  • A woman's partner has decreased motility and decreased normal morphology
  • A woman is using frozen donor sperm
  • A couple experiences sexual dysfunction
  • Ovarian stimulation with gonadotropins is performed (almost always)
  • Ovarian stimulation with clomiphene is performed (often)

The procedure is performed around the time of ovulation when the eggs are released.  Sperm is collected by masturbation by the man prior to the procedure.  It is then washed with a special solution in the laboratory and injected into the uterus.  Sometimes, when sperm cannot be ejaculated or is of very poor quality, it can be obtained from the man by specialized surgical procedures, such as testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) or microepidydimal sperm aspiration (MESA).
