Assisted hatching is a microscopic manipulation procedure utilized in some IVF cycles to help embryo implantation into the uterus. Each embryo has an outer covering, the zona pellucida, which must break down to allow implantation of the embryo into the endometrium (lining of the uterus). Assisted hatching involves partially opening, or breaking down, the zona pellucida by either mechanical disruption or dilute acid application. This procedure is generally reserved for select groups of patients, typically women over 38 years of age, women with repetitive IVF failure, or for embryos with abnormally thickened zona pellucidas. |
